TIME IS RUNNING OUT

Mixed Media Installation
14 x 62 in.

Climate change will affect communities differently based on the state of the region. In developing countries, the effects of climate change will be more intense than in a city with money to prepare for environmental disasters. Places and social classes with shelter issues and homelessness will struggle more than upper-class groups. Throughout history, climate change has been increasing rapidly as the population grows and industrialization progresses. The icebergs are melting, pollution is growing, and the sea levels are rising. While the steady progression of climate change is moving, it has been realized that some communities will be affected harsher than others. While the higher-income communities are able to ignore the steady progression of climate change because they have enough resources and money to protect themselves, the lower-income communities are suffering from each addition to the problem. Time is running out and people, especially in lesser developed societies, are already starting to experience some of the backlashes from humanity's detrimental footprint on the earth.

I chose to create an hourglass sculpture to show the time running out and eventually the world will be gone from climate change. The three tier stand of people at the bottom of the hourglass represent each social group and who will be destroyed first according to climate change environmental bias. Lower-income and poor is 61% of the global population, I put 61 figures on the smallest tier to represent their percentage, that they have the least resources (the least space), and that they will be covered by sand first. On the second tier stands 17 figures, this is because 17% of the global population is middle income. The second tier has more resources than the lower-income and poor so their space on the tier stand is larger and more spacious. The third tier represents the people with high income, 22% of the population is high income. There are 22 figures with the most space and coverage from the falling sand of the hourglass to represent their large amount of resources and exceeding safety from climate change compared to the poor, lower-income, and middle-income people.
