CAUSE AND AFFECT

Mixed Media Installation
100 x 176 in.

The definition of affect is to touch one’s feelings, to move them emotionally. The inception of my existence could be defined as broken and unideal. Naturally I inherit the tumultuous reality of my parents brief relationship. My mother represents the first chain, and my biological father represents the second chain. As for myself, the glass ball wrapped with red veins exemplifies my broken start. This piece represents how my beginning continuously affects my perception and existence in this world. I have no control over the reality of my life; yet, this does not mean the rest of my life will be broken. I am affected by the cause of my existence, though it does not define me.

The action of breaking the ball represents taking my life into my own hands. The glass balls symbolize the uncertain future, and serve as a reminder to embrace life and accept the damage. Newton's Cradle expresses the collision of my life events combined with the energy of life persisting forward. Usually Newton's Cradle is made with whole balls, sturdy and strong. A hollow, glass ball demonstrates the instabilities of my life and the unpredictability of my future.
